Heklina, a well-known drag performer from San Francisco, has been found dead in London just before her scheduled performance at the Soho Theatre alongside Peaches Christ.
Peaches Christ, whose real name is Joshua Grannell, shared a statement on social media expressing his shock and devastation. The Soho Theatre confirmed Heklina’s death in a statement on Twitter. Heklina was a luminary of the San Francisco drag scene, having started hosting the weekly series "Mother" at the Stud in 1996 when she was just 28 years old. She later co-opened the SoMa drag venue Oasis in 2015 and was an emcee of a number of popular city events, including Pride and the Folsom Street Fair.
The cause of her death has not yet been revealed by authorities. Fellow drag performers, city officials, filmmakers, and activists have shared tributes for the icon.
